DaysofPal- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned on Sunday that unexploded ordnance continues to pose a serious threat to children in the Gaza Strip, as remnants of the war remain scattered across the territory following the extensive destruction caused by Israel’s genocidal campaign.
UNRWA said estimates by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) suggest between 5% and 10% of the munitions fired into Gaza did not explode. These unexploded weapons remain hidden among collapsed buildings and rubble, creating a persistent danger, particularly for children who live and play in devastated neighborhoods.
The agency said its teams, with support and training from UNMAS, are conducting awareness sessions for children to educate them about the dangers of suspicious objects. The program encourages children to avoid touching unidentified items and to report them to the relevant authorities in order to prevent injuries and save lives.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that unexploded ordnance is one of the most significant humanitarian challenges facing Gaza after many months of war.
UN agencies have also stressed that clearing these hazardous remnants will require highly specialized operations that could take years to complete, given the scale of destruction across the enclave.
