DaysofPal- Gaza’s government media office said Wednesday that an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip killed a Palestinian journalist, bringing the total number of journalists killed since last year to 190.
Alaa Barhoum, an editor for multiple media outlets, was identified as the victim. He was one of eleven Palestinians, mostly women and children, who were killed in an airstrike on Gaza City’s Al-Tabi’in School.
The office issued a statement strongly condemning the targeting, killing, and assassination of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces. It called on the international community to hold the Israeli government accountable and to exert pressure on it to stop its “genocide” in Gaza.
Last month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres deemed the killings of journalists in Gaza “unacceptable” and called for the protection of the press.
“Journalists in Gaza have been killed at a level unseen in any conflict,” he stated in a message read at the opening of the UN International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East 2024 in Geneva.
“The ongoing ban on international journalists visiting Gaza suffocates the truth even more,” Guterres emphasized.
