DaysofPal – The Global Steadfastness (Sumud) Flotilla is pressing ahead toward the shores of the besieged Gaza Strip, undeterred by mounting Israeli threats and intimidation. The massive convoy, carrying more than 50 ships loaded with humanitarian aid, is determined to break the 18-year blockade that has left more than 2.4 million Palestinians trapped in dire conditions.
According to Israel’s official broadcasting corporation, the flotilla has already entered the Israeli Navy’s preparedness zone and was on Tuesday reported to be only 150 miles from Gaza’s shores. Israeli authorities have confirmed a strict political decision to prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza “by any means possible.”
The flotilla, which includes more than 500 activists from 40 countries, said early Wednesday it had gone on high alert after detecting intensified drone activity overhead. On its Telegram channel, it reported “various scenarios unfolding in the coming hours” and described encounters with unidentified vessels sailing without lights that approached some of its boats before retreating.
Participants said they had implemented security measures in anticipation of possible interception but stressed: “We continue sailing towards Gaza undeterred by Israeli threats and intimidation.”
Brazilian activist Tiago Avila, who is aboard the flotilla, wrote on Instagram that an Israeli military vessel had already carried out dangerous maneuvers against the convoy:“It terrorized our boats, disrupted our communication systems, and performed extremely dangerous maneuvers around our two flagship ships, Alma and Sirius.
Despite the loss of electronic equipment, no one was harmed, and we will continue our journey to Gaza to break the blockade and establish a humanitarian corridor.”
Saif Abu Kishk, spokesman for the Global Resilience Flotilla Committee, warned that any interception by Israel would amount to an act of piracy and a violation of international law since the flotilla remains in international waters. He stressed that the instructions to all participating boats are clear: they must continue sailing towards Gaza, even if Israel intercepts some of the other vessels.
“The flotilla will continue operating in the coming days even if Israel attacks,” Abu Kishk said, adding that the humanitarian message is larger than a single convoy and that members expect Israeli forces to continue their campaign of psychological intimidation.
The International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza confirmed via its X platform that the flotilla has activated its high alert status, particularly as it has entered a high-risk zone where past Gaza-bound flotillas were violently intercepted.
Carrying both aid and a message of defiance, the Sumud Flotilla marks the first attempt of its kind since Israel imposed its blockade on Gaza nearly two decades ago. With 50 ships and more than 500 international activists on board, its participants insist they will not be turned back, even as Israeli threats escalate by the hour.
