DayfoPal — A solidarity event held at SOAS University of London on Friday brought together lawyers, activists, and political figures who warned that the situation facing Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons has sharply deteriorated since October 2023.
The event, organized by the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) in partnership with the Red Ribbons Campaign, featured campaign coordinator Adnan Hmidan, ICJP director Tayb Ali, lawyer Khaled Mahajneh, activist Saif Abu Keshek, campaigner Katrina Graham, and Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn.
Speakers said that while international attention remains focused on the war in Gaza, the conditions of thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli detention facilities have received comparatively limited scrutiny.
They cited concerns over administrative detention, restrictions on family and Red Cross access, prolonged isolation, medical neglect, and reports of mistreatment.
Opening the event, Hmidan said the Red Ribbons Campaign was created to ensure that Palestinian detainees “are not erased from international consciousness.”
He noted that those held in Israeli custody include journalists, doctors, students, women, and children, many of whom are detained without formal charges.
Mahajneh described Israeli prisons as “a parallel war inside the prisons,” saying detainees face severe deprivation of food, medical care, and basic dignity.
He also expressed concern over proposed Israeli legislative measures that he said could further expand punitive policies toward Palestinian detainees.
Tayb Ali focused on the legal implications of those proposals, arguing that they raise serious questions about due process, judicial oversight, and compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
Corbyn expressed solidarity with Palestinian detainees and called for greater international scrutiny of conditions inside Israeli prisons.
Other speakers urged governments, international organizations, and civil society groups to push for independent investigations and stronger accountability mechanisms.
The event concluded with calls for sustained international engagement to address what participants described as a growing humanitarian and legal crisis affecting Palestinian detainees.
