GAZA – A displaced Palestinian in the Gaza Strip documented a tense encounter after discovering a large snake inside his family’s displacement tent, in a scene that underscores the dangerous and deteriorating conditions facing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians forced to live in makeshift shelters.
The young man shared a video on Instagram showing a snake, estimated to be more than one meter long, moving through the tent among the family’s belongings.
The footage shows him carefully attempting to capture and remove the reptile using a grabbing tool before guiding it out of the tent with a stick. A young boy assisting him displayed remarkable composure throughout the incident, helping remove the snake from the shelter.
The video quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread attention and praise for the pair’s calm response in what could have become a dangerous situation.
Growing environmental dangers in displacement camps
The incident comes as displaced Palestinians across Gaza report an increasing presence of snakes, rodents, and insects around overcrowded displacement camps, particularly during the summer months as temperatures continue to rise.
The worsening environmental conditions have become another daily challenge for families already struggling under Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has repeatedly warned of deteriorating health and environmental conditions in displacement sites across the Strip.
According to the UN agency, approximately 80 percent of assessed displacement sites suffer from recurring infestations of rodents and pests due to the accumulation of solid waste, damaged sewage systems, overcrowding, and the collapse of basic sanitation services.
Humanitarian organizations warn that these conditions create an ideal environment for the spread of insects, reptiles, and disease, further endangering the lives of displaced Palestinians living in tents with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare.
A glimpse into daily life under displacement
While many viewers praised the young man’s composure and the child’s courage, others said the video reflects the harsh reality of daily life for Gaza’s displaced population.
For many Palestinians, surviving Israeli bombardment is only one part of a broader struggle that includes unsafe shelter, deteriorating public health conditions, and constant exposure to environmental hazards inside overcrowded displacement camps, where families continue to endure the consequences of Israel’s ongoing military assault and siege.
