DaysofPal – Palestinian villages across the West Bank are enduring escalating violence from Israeli settlers, whose attacks have intensified since the recent war between Israel, the United States, and Iran. While missiles fly overhead in retaliation strikes against Israeli targets, the immediate threat on the ground comes from armed settlers, often supported by Israeli military forces, terrorizing rural Palestinian communities.
Residents describe the settlers’ actions as relentless, targeting homes, infrastructure, and people with weapons, pepper spray, and intimidation. Unlike Israeli settlements, which are equipped with sirens and bomb shelters, nearby Palestinian villages lack protections, leaving civilians exposed.
Settler Violence Escalates in Rural Villages
In northern West Bank villages like Duma, debris from missiles falls nearby, but locals say the real danger comes from settlers patrolling their areas. “We have the rockets in the sky, but the settlers are at our door,” said 24-year-old Thabet Mosallam. “They are what we are afraid of right now.”
Reports detail beatings, property destruction, and attacks on children and the elderly. One Bedouin community near Duma experienced hours of assaults by settlers who destroyed water tanks, smashed vehicles, and pepper-sprayed residents, including elderly women. Video evidence shows soldiers often stood by as violence continued, arresting Palestinians defending their families while allowing settlers to escape accountability.
Many communities have been forced to restrict movement due to the installation of gates and lockdown measures by Israeli authorities, leaving residents without access to medical care, food, or basic services. “The army closes the gate, and the settler comes and stands there,” explained Muhammad, a neighbor of the Mosallams.
Forced Displacement and Growing Humanitarian Crisis
The ongoing attacks have sparked a wave of forced displacement, echoing the experiences of communities targeted during the 2023 Gaza war and subsequent regional conflicts. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 4,000 Palestinians have been displaced from more than 80 communities in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.
Ra’id Zawahra, a young resident of Ein al-Rashash, described losing his home and community to repeated settler assaults, despite the presence of Israeli solidarity activists. After activists were removed by military order, settlers attacked Zawahra’s property, destroying solar panels and tearing down his home.
Allegra Pacheco, head of the West Bank Protection Consortium, warned of a “domino effect” of violence and displacement, noting that one community’s evacuation often leaves neighboring villages vulnerable. The ongoing restrictions, combined with settler attacks, are undermining Palestinian resilience and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the West Bank.
The combination of regional conflict, military lockdowns, and unchecked settler violence has left West Bank communities in a state of daily terror, struggling to protect themselves from both immediate and long-term threats.
