DaysofPal- A Palestinian detainee died in Israeli custody on Thursday, marking the second death in Israeli prisons within just 24 hours, according to the prisoners’ affairs groups.
Alaa Marwan Hamza al-Mahlawi, 42, from Gaza, passed away at Assaf Harofeh Hospital, southwest of Tel Aviv, after being transferred from Negev prison in southern Israel in November. The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society issued a joint statement confirming his death.
Mahlawi’s death came one week after the death of 45-year-old West Banker Mohammad Walid Hussein Ali, who was arrested and taken to the Jalamah interrogation centre in northern Israel.
According to the statement, Mahlawi was arrested on December 21, 2023. His family stated that, except for a minor eye condition, he had no chronic illnesses before being detained. On the same day his father was killed in Gaza, Mahlawi, a father of four, was arrested, according to the two groups.
Mahlawi’s death raises the total number of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli prisons since last year to 49, including 30 from Gaza, according to Palestinian sources.
An estimated 10,300 Palestinians are currently being held in Israeli prisons, though it is unknown how many of them are from Gaza.
Over 105,700 people have been injured and nearly 44,600 people have died as a result of Israel’s ongoing offensive on Gaza since October 2023, the majority of whom were women and children. International condemnation of this ruthless war has grown in the second year, with many people accusing the attacks and the blockade of humanitarian aid of being part of a larger, coordinated attempt to wipe out Gaza’s population.
In response to the violence, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its deadly actions in the region.
