DaysofPal- The Prisoners’ and Freed Prisoners’ Affairs Authority has condemned the “tragic” conditions faced by Palestinian detainees in Shatta prison, detailing severe abuses and neglect endured by prisoners. In a statement released on Thursday, the authority described a litany of human rights violations, including brutal beatings, frequent use of tear gas, and inadequate food provisions.
Severe Abuse and Neglect
According to the statement, detainees are routinely subjected to physical abuse at the hands of prison guards, with many experiencing severe beatings and continuous exposure to chemical irritants. Food served to prisoners is reportedly raw and unsalted, exacerbating their suffering.
Medical negligence was also highlighted as a major concern. Sick detainees have reported being denied proper care, leaving their health conditions to deteriorate. Among those affected is Walid Muslim, detained since September 2024, who suffers from psoriasis following his arrest. Despite his deteriorating health, he has not received any treatment. Another detainee, Fadi Raddad, complains of persistent pain in his right shoulder and back after being brutally assaulted by guards, with no medical attention provided despite repeated requests.
Religious and Humanitarian Concerns
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, detainees have raised additional concerns about their ability to practice religious rituals. They demand accurate schedules for fasting and prayer times, as well as improved access to copies of the Quran. Currently, only one copy of the Quran is available per room, insufficient for the number of prisoners.
The detainees appealed to relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to intervene, urging the prison administration to facilitate religious practices during Ramadan and improve the abysmal quality of food provided.
Call for Action
Following a recent visit by a lawyer, detainees reiterated their urgent call for intervention from international bodies and local institutions. They stressed the need for immediate improvements in living conditions, including better healthcare, nutrition, and respect for religious rights.
The Prisoners’ and Freed Prisoners’ Affairs Authority urged the international community to pressure Israeli occupation to adhere to international standards for the treatment of prisoners. It emphasized that the current situation constitutes a grave violation of human rights and called for accountability to ensure humane treatment of all detainees.
This report underscores the ongoing struggle of Palestinian prisoners under Israeli occupation, highlighting the critical need for sustained advocacy and action to address these systemic injustices.
