The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued a dire warning that humanitarian operations in Gaza are on the “verge of total collapse” after two months of Israel blocking aid deliveries to the besieged territory.
In a statement released Tuesday, the ICRC said, “Without an immediate resumption of aid deliveries, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will not have access to the food, medicines, and life-saving supplies needed to sustain many of its programmes in Gaza.”
The warning comes as Israel continues to enforce tight control over the entry of international aid into Gaza, home to 2.4 million Palestinians. On March 2, Israel halted all aid deliveries—just days before it officially ended a ceasefire that had briefly eased hostilities in the 15-month-long war.
“Civilians in Gaza are facing an overwhelming daily struggle to survive the dangers of hostilities, cope with relentless displacement, and endure the consequences of being deprived of urgent humanitarian assistance,” said Pascal Hundt, the ICRC’s deputy director of operations.
“This situation must not – and cannot – be allowed to escalate further,” he added.
Humanitarian groups have repeatedly called for the full reopening of aid corridors into Gaza, warning that the blockade has exacerbated already catastrophic levels of hunger, disease, and displacement across the territory.
With hospitals and aid facilities shutting down due to lack of fuel, supplies, and access, the ICRC’s latest statement underscores the critical urgency for international intervention to restore humanitarian lifelines.
