DaysofPal- Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, met in Doha on Monday with a senior Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the group’s political bureau, according to a statement from the Emiri Diwan.
The discussions focused on ongoing ceasefire negotiations and efforts to secure a long-term truce in Gaza, a region devastated by the ongoing conflict. The meeting coincided with a statement from a senior Hamas official earlier in the day, describing the group’s response to a ceasefire proposal as “positive.”
During the talks, the Emir reiterated Qatar’s steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause and affirmed the nation’s support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
In a related development, Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin held discussions with Hamas political bureau officials, according to Türkiye’s Anadolu news agency. Kalin reportedly engaged in phone talks with Hamas representatives, assessing the progress of ceasefire negotiations and emphasizing the importance of continued diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in Gaza.
Indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel in Doha have shown progress towards a ceasefire agreement, Palestinian and Israeli officials confirmed on Monday. The talks highlight Qatar’s pivotal role as a mediator in the efforts to bring stability to the region.
Approximately 99 Israelis are thought to be imprisoned in Gaza, while over 10,300 Palestinian prisoners are currently housed in Israeli jails. According to Hamas, numerous Israeli captives in their custody have recently been killed by Israeli airstrikes.
The prisoner swap and ceasefire talks, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, have faced repeated interruptions due to new conditions imposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli opposition and families of captives have accused Netanyahu of obstructing progress toward a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas.
