PRC: Body of Slain Palestinian Prisoner Shows Torture Marks

Jenin, West Bank — The Palestine Red Crescent Society PRC announced the recovery of the body of Ayman Rajih Abed, a 50-year-old prisoner from Kafr Dan, west of Jenin, from the Salem military checkpoint.

At the Jenin Government Hospital, medical personnel reported that Abed’s body was still handcuffed and exhibited clear signs of torture. Hospital director Wissam Bakr stated that Abed’s body displayed severe marks of beatings, suggesting he had been tortured to death by Israeli soldiers while in detention.

According to Ayman Taha, Israeli forces conducted a raid on Abed’s home at dawn, where he was reportedly beaten before being transported to the military checkpoint. Taha noted that Abed was in good health at the time of his arrest and attributed his death to the torture he endured during detention.

Abed’s death brings the confirmed number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees killed in Israeli custody since October 7 to 25. This count includes only those whose identities have been verified, as Israeli authorities continue to withhold information about many other deaths in prisons and detention camps.

The Israeli military has been conducting its most extensive operation in the northern West Bank since 2002. Since last Wednesday, troops have invaded Jenin, Tulkarm, and their surrounding refugee camps, including the Fara camp near Tubas.

The occupation forces withdrew from the Fara camp early Thursday morning and from Tulkarm later that evening. However, attacks in Jenin persist, with the Israeli military employing armored forces and air support. According to Israeli military sources, at least 26 Palestinians have been killed.

On July 19, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark opinion declaring Israel’s long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories to be unlawful, calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
