In response to news reports indicating that hundreds of Palestinians held by Israel in just Gilboa prison have been infected with COVID-19, The Head of the Committee for the Families of Prisoners in Occupied Jerusalem, Amjad Abu Asab demanded the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) to acts immediately to halt the spread of the virus and to protect Palestinian prisoners.
Abu Asab had called an urgent act on the Israeli Supreme Court demanding that Israeli authorities take all necessary actions to protect the “security prisoners” being held in the overcrowded Gilboa prison from a COVID-19 outbreak.
Israel has consistently failed to provide prisoners with basic precautionary services since the beginning of the pandemic, and even withdrew some food and hygiene products from prison commissaries.
According to the NGO, Israel detains nearly 5,400 Palestinians, including 41 women, 170 children and 370 administrative detainees who it holds without charge or trial.
