Leaked document: Abbas fully recognises Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’

Days of Palestine -

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas accepts Abu Deis as Palestinian state’s capital as part of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan known as the “Deal of the Century,” President of Wold Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder has said.

In a letter, a copy of which was leaked to the Days of Palestine, Lauder, said he had visited the PLO Secretary Saek Erekat upon the request of Mahmoud Abbas and discussed with him the vision of peace in the Middle East and the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The letter was sent by Lauder, who visited the region at the beginning of this year along with the US Vice President Mike Pence, to the US Envoy to the Middle Eeast Peace Process Jared Kushner on January 22, 2018, breifing him about what happened in the meeting with Erekat.

“Mr Erekat infomred me that the PAlstinian reaction against Trum announcement on Jerusalem is temporary and will not last for long time and what is circulated in the media aims to alleviate the Palestinian public outrage,” Lauder wrote to Kushner.

“He [Erekat] added that Abbas is open to the US peace deal, which I think it was obvious in the last meeting between President Abbas and President Trump,” he also wrote.

In bullet points, Lauder ended his letter: “Erekat mentioned that President Abbas’s position can be understood as follow:

  • Abbas would accept “Abu Deis” as Capotal of Palestestinian state with access to the Holy sites.
  • Fair solution to the Palestinian refugees issue with compansation as their return is unrealistic solution.
  • Continuation of PA measures in the Gaza Strip aims to completely abondon the responsibility for it, even if it reaches to full separation from the West Bank.
  • The Palestinian Authority will keep controlling the security situation to prevent any escalation in the West Bank.
  • Erekat didn’t mention the Israeli settlement in the West Bank as I think it is not an obstacle to the deal.

Ending his letter, Lauder informed Kushner about Erekat’s health condition, who had a lung transplant in the US.

“Erekat seemed in good health after lung translant and said he will have another surgery next week in the US,” he wroted in the bottom of the letter which he signed along with his name and position.
