Israeli occupation authorities issued 1,086 administrative detention orders against Palestinian prisoners in 2017, Palestinian Prisoners’ Centre for Studies revealed on Wednesday.
According to the Palestinian centre, 647 of those orders were renewal for previous orders issued againsr prisoners already in administrative detention, ranging from 2-6 months each.
Israeli occupation authorities can extend a Palestinian prisoner’s detention without charge or trial indefinitely.
Some 439 of the total were for new orders, whereby a Palestinian arrested by occupation forces is transferred to administrative detention.
Israel’s systematic use of administrative detention as a tool of political repression against Palestinians living under military occupation has been condemned by various local and international human rights bodies.
