Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip –The Palestinian Islamist Movement Hamas launched on Thursday a weeklong social media campaign with hashtag #AskHamas.
“The campaign is aiming to expose Hamas real position to the social media users all over the world,” Taher al-Nouno, Hamas official said.
“Most of the people around the world receive information about Hamas from mass media,” said Al-Nouno, “today, we want them to get information about Hams from the mouth of the horse.”
According to Al-Nouno, the weeklong campaign would call for the people to ask questions, using the hashtag, for Hamas leaders, “who will be available for four days.” Then, the leaders would reply to their answers on Twitter everyday between 7and 10pm, Palestine time.
Al-Nounou said the campaign would primarily target western audiences, especially in the EU, US and Canada in hopes of encouraging the EU to remove Hamas from its list of “terrorist organisations.”
Such step is the first of its kind that an Islamist group uses social media campaign to challenge the narrative of the mainstream media, mainly in the West.
‘Brilliant initiative’
Denny Cormier, an American activist living currently in Gaza, posted on his Facebook: “I completely support this programme and will do whatever I can to personally support what they are trying to do.”
He said he is ready to “do whatever it takes to overcome the western media bias.”
“As an international living in Gaza,” Cormier wrote, “I remain removed from politics here in Gaza – other than to support Palestinians and their right to self-determination – but this program is a step in the right direction to begin to dispel many of the myths about Hamas.”
Regarding the kind of counter campaign might face Hamas’ week, Cormier wrote: “It will not be an easy road, but it is an absolutely necessary and brilliant initiative.”
