Witnesses told Days of Palestine that dozens of Israeli police officers gathered Al-Magharbeh Gate, leading to the Sanctity Yards of the Mosque, in the early in the morning, and that clashes began in in front the Gate after police had blocked the Palestinians out of their Mosque.
Palestinians already barricaded inside the Mosque tried to prevent the Israeli police and settlers from entering into the Mosque. The witnesses said the police fired tear gas and rubber-coated bullets at the Palestinians. The Palestinians responded by throwing stones.
Thirty Palestinians, including senior officials were hurt by rubber-coated bullets and shrapnel from stun grenades, and dozens of others suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation, medics inside the Mosque said.
Israeli police locked the Gates of the Mosque during the clashes with the Muslim worshipers inside. The clashes turned fiercer as Israeli Minister of Housing Uri Ariel entered the compound with around 60 of the extremist Israeli Jews.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld tweeted: “Four police officers were lightly injured after being hit by rocks.”
Al-Aqsa is located in East Jerusalem, part of the internationally recognised Palestinian territories that have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967. Al-Aqsa Mosque the third holiest place for around two billion Muslims around the world.
