Days of Palestine, Jerusalem –A Palestinian family demolished on Tuesday part its house in East Jerusalem to avoid paying fines after Israeli municipality issued a demolition order.
Walid al-Ubeidi has recently built and expansion to his house due to the increasing number of his family members. His house consisted of three rooms. He built only one extra room.
He did his best to obtain building permits from the municipality for the expansion, but he got nothing since 2002.
An Israeli court recently ordered the family to demolish the new addition or it would face paying huge fees for the municipality to demolish it.
Israeli occupation rarely grants Palestinians permits to build in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, although 550,000 Jewish settlers are frequently given building permits and allowed to expand their homes and properties.
Only 14 percent of East Jerusalem land is zoned for Palestinian residential construction, while one-third of Palestinian land has been confiscated since 1967 to build illegal Jewish-only settlements, the Association for Civil Rights in ‘Israel’ says.
