Days of Palestine, Gaza –Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip sailed on Wednesday up to six nautical miles deep in the Mediterranean water.
Head of Fishermen Syndication in Gaza Nizar Ayyash said that the fishermen started sailing deep up to six miles since Wednesday after the had been informed to do so by the Palestinian officials in relation to the ceasefire deal.
A term in the deal stipulates that the fishing zone in the Strip is to be expanded up to six nautical miles immediately after the announcement of the deal, which took place in Tuesday evening.
The six miles are to be gradually expanded to nine and then 12 miles later on.
Nabil Salim, 39, fisherman from Al-Shate’ Refugee Camp, said that fishing deep in the sea “means more income because catch more fish.”
Ayyash stressed that the Israeli occupation has to stick to what it agreed on in the ceasefire deal –expanding the fishing zone up to 12 miles. “This will give fishermen better opportunities to improve their income and makes extra work opportunities,” Ayyash said.
According to official statistics, the losses of the fishing industry during the Israeli war exceeded $9million.
Ayyash said that 30 fishing boats were completely destroyed and around 70 others were partially destroyed. He Also said that 50 workshops for the fishermen in the small seaport of Gaza were also destroyed.
