DaysofPal- More than 500,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip have lost their jobs since the Israeli occupation launched its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, according to figures released Saturday by the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions, cited by Anadolu Agency.
The federation said Israeli policies, including tight blockades, repeated closures and daily military raids , have left workers unable to reach their jobs or sustain their livelihoods, calling the situation a compounded crime and a violation of Palestinians’ basic right to work and live in dignity.
Israeli occupation policies over more than two years of continuous aggression have led to more than 500,000 Palestinian workers losing their livelihood, the union’s statement said, adding that unemployment has soared to unprecedented levels: above 50 percent in the West Bank and more than 84 percent in the Gaza Strip.
The union estimated Palestinian workers’ economic losses at over $9bn, attributing the damage both to restrictions preventing people from getting to work and to the widespread destruction of economic sectors and infrastructure.
Since October 2023, at least 44 Palestinian workers have been killed, hundreds injured and more than 34,000 detained by Israeli occupation forces, the federation added.
