Amid growing pressure from his far-right coalition partners, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly preparing a plan to annex the entirety of the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media reports cited by Al Jazeera.
The development marks a dramatic escalation from previous Israeli positions, and, if carried out, would represent a full territorial takeover of Palestinian land — a move widely condemned by the international community as illegal under international law.
Annexation as Political Survival
Sources say the plan was discussed behind closed doors during a high-level Israeli Security Cabinet meeting earlier this week. Netanyahu, flanked by security chiefs and key ministers, is reportedly considering the proposal to appease right-wing factions within his coalition government, many of whom have long called for the full occupation and settlement of Gaza.
These hardline figures have openly advocated for the forced removal of Palestinians from the enclave, what they describe as “voluntary migration,” but what international observers and rights groups have condemned as a blueprint for ethnic cleansing.
Siege Strategy in Disguise?
While Israeli authorities claim they are increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza amid rising international criticism over mass hunger and famine, the annexation plan would reportedly involve a total siege of specific areas, cutting off access to water, food, fuel, and medical supplies.
If implemented, this would further isolate and choke off parts of Gaza already reeling from nearly ten months of war, displacement, and blockade. Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of an imminent famine, with tens of thousands already facing starvation.
Military Reentry into Central Gaza
In addition to administrative control, the plan reportedly includes an expansion of Israeli military operations into central Gaza, a region where troops have so far refrained from entering on the ground.
The justification for this push, according to Israeli media reports, would be intelligence related to the presence of Israeli captives. However, critics say this could be a pretext to expand control over previously untouched areas, entrenching occupation under the guise of security.
International Outcry Growing
While Israeli officials have not formally announced the plan, leaks have already triggered widespread concern among Palestinian leaders and human rights groups.
The move could permanently derail prospects for a two-state solution and deepen what the UN has already described as a “humanitarian hellscape” in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s apparent willingness to escalate to maintain his fragile governing coalition comes amid surging calls for accountability, with some world leaders warning of further destabilization of the region if Israel moves forward with annexation.
As Gaza suffers from blockade-induced famine and widespread displacement, the looming question remains: Will the world intervene before irreversible damage is done?
