The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that the controversial flag march through the occupied Jerusalem, which is under Israeli control, will occur as planned on Thursday.
Every year, extremist Israeli settlers organize a Flag March to commemorate what they refer to as the “unification of Jerusalem,” which is a reference to the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem in 1967.
Netanyahu informed the members of his right-wing Likud Party in the Knesset that the flag march would remain on the same course, going ahead as scheduled.
Violent clashes between extremist Israelis and Palestinian locals erupted as a result of the march, leading to an 11-day Israeli aggression on Gaza in May 2021.
Four Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich among them, are set to partake in the flag march, per Israeli Channel 13.
Israeli police announced that they will have 2,000 officers on duty during the march in Jerusalem.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, and then declared the whole city part of the country in 1980, although this action has not been accepted by the global community.
