Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have signed today July 23rd in China’s Beijing an accord to form a unity government in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, marking a significant move in their efforts to resolve their long-standing rivalry.
Despite that the accord lacks specific guarantees or timelines, it vitally represents a crucial initial move towards cooperation and good intuitions.
The Beijing declaration was announced by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, and outlines both side’s commitment to end their division; meanwhile strengthening the Palestinian unity and paving the way for a unified government in the Palestinian occupied territories.
The development comes as china called the two parties to sit on the table and negotiate about the post-war phase, especially that the war in Gaza continues into its 10th month with ongoing discussions about a cease-fire and plans for postwar governance.
The unity efforts will be motivated by the desire to present a cohesive plan for futur governance and elections in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
