MPs Call for Independent Inquiry into UK’s Complicity in Israel’s War on Gaza

DayofPal– A powerful coalition of MPs, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer, and Labour’s Richard Burgon, has called for an independent inquiry into the UK’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, following a mounting death toll that now exceeds 61,000.

The MPs, who represent a broad spectrum of political views, argue that transparency and accountability are critical in ensuring justice for the lives lost in the war.

The MPs’ call comes amidst growing international condemnation of Israel’s actions, with two senior Israeli officials now facing warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Their demand echoes a similar push for accountability made after the Iraq war, which led to the 2016 Chilcot inquiry that highlighted serious failings in Britain’s decision to go to war in Iraq.

“The UK has played a significant role in the ongoing assault in Gaza,” the MPs wrote in a joint statement. “From the sale of weapons to the supply of intelligence, to the use of RAF bases in Cyprus, Britain’s involvement cannot be ignored. Just as we demanded accountability for Iraq, we must now do the same for Gaza.”

The MPs are seeking an independent inquiry with legal powers to investigate the decisions made by British officials, scrutinizing the political and military support provided to Israel in its war.

They want answers to vital questions: What decisions were made? How were they made? And what were the consequences of those decisions?

As the war continues, many critics argue that British support for Israel risks implicating the UK in breaches of international law. The MPs’ demand for an inquiry is a direct challenge to the government, calling for full transparency and for ministers involved since October 2023 to fully cooperate with the investigation.

“The grave breaches of international law that some suspect British officials are involved in will not disappear unless the truth is brought to light,” said Corbyn, echoing the sentiments of the group. “This inquiry is not just necessary; it’s essential for the integrity of democracy.”

This call has sparked widespread debate, with those in favor arguing that the UK must take responsibility for its role in global conflicts, while others defend Britain’s actions as part of international diplomacy and security alliances.

Regardless of political allegiance, the inquiry’s supporters stress that this issue is about upholding the core democratic principles of transparency, justice, and accountability.

As the crisis in Gaza deepens, the political fallout in Britain is becoming ever more intense. Whether this inquiry will gain traction in Parliament remains to be seen, but for now, the voices calling for accountability grow louder.
