In a recent development reported by the BBC, Palestinians living outside their homeland have leveled accusations against the technology giant Microsoft, claiming that their email accounts have been abruptly terminated. This sudden action has reportedly severed their access to essential online services and communication tools.
The group affected by this measure has expressed that the closure of their accounts has also prevented them from utilizing Skype, a video communication platform owned by Microsoft, to stay in touch with family members residing in Gaza.
In response to these allegations, Microsoft has stated that the actions taken were due to violations of its terms of service by the users in question. The company has refuted any suggestions of blocking users or calls based on geographical regions.
Despite these claims, Skype continues to be a vital and cost-effective means of communication for individuals in Gaza, where options for international calls are often unreliable and carry a high cost.
In a related context, Meta, the parent entity of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, announced earlier this week that it would begin removing posts that target “Zionists” in a derogatory manner when the term is employed as a substitute for Jewish individuals and Israelis, rather than as a reference to proponents of a political ideology.
This policy revision by Meta arrives amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly during the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.
Meta has faced longstanding criticism regarding its content moderation policies related to the Middle East. This scrutiny intensified with the outbreak of hostilities, as various rights organizations accused the company of censoring content that supports Palestinian perspectives on Facebook and Instagram.
