DaysofPal- UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warned of intensifying political pressures aimed at ending the role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), highlighting potential legal ramifications that could reach the International Court of Justice.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Lazzarini noted that the agency faces growing political pressures amid reports of the demolition of its headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem.
He stressed that any steps to terminate UNRWA’s operations or target its premises could trigger international legal consequences, with UN warnings indicating that such actions might open pathways to judicial proceedings on the global stage.
Since the onset of the war in Gaza, the Israeli occupation has escalated its political and media campaign against the agency, accusing it of bias or involvement of staff in alleged misconduct, claims repeatedly denied by UNRWA.
This has included calls to halt funding, restrict activities, and on-the-ground administrative measures that UN officials have deemed direct attacks on its humanitarian work.
The UN has emphasized that UNRWA’s continuity is essential for providing basic services to millions of Palestinian refugees, cautioning that undermining its role could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and lead to broader legal and political fallout internationally.
