DaysofPal- The Interior Ministry in Gaza has warned that the Israeli plan to invade Gaza City amounts to a death and displacement sentence for more than 1.2 million residents and displaced people sheltering in the city.
In a press statement on Thursday, the ministry said that implementing the Israeli plan would constitute a major humanitarian catastrophe and an explicit war crime requiring a firm international response.
It stressed that this destructive scheme comes amid already dire conditions across the Gaza Strip, where civilians are crammed into small areas lacking the most basic necessities of life.
The ministry added that what has been taking place in the Zaytoun and Sabra neighborhoods for nearly ten days, and earlier in Shuja’iyya, Tuffah, and Daraj, reflects a continuation of this destructive path.
It warned that the fate of Gaza City would mirror the devastation of Rafah, Khan Younis, and northern Gaza if the international community remains silent in the face of Israeli brutality.
The ministry called on the international community and all relevant bodies to take serious and effective measures to pressure Israel to halt its aggression and criminal plans, and to save Gaza’s population from the forced displacement scheme it seeks to impose.
The Israeli occupation army announced on Thursday it had begun making “preliminary warning calls” to medical bodies and international organizations in northern Gaza in preparation for the forcible evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza City toward the south, ahead of re-occupying the city and expelling its people.
On Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz approved the Israeli military plan to occupy Gaza City in an operation dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots 2”.
The plan was endorsed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes.
The Israeli plan calls for displacing Palestinians from Gaza City, besieging it, and carrying out ground and aerial assaults, according to an army spokesperson.
Since August 11, Israeli forces have continued a relentless assault on Zaytoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City, whereas approval of the re-occupation plan signals a wider bloody escalation targeting civilians.
Backed by U.S. support, the Israeli occupation forces have been carrying out a genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving at least 62,192 Palestinians killed, 157,114 injured, over 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and a famine that has claimed the lives of 271 people, including 112 children.
