The Israeli occupation on Thursday set a Palestinian detainee free who had been held captive for 40 years.
The Palestinian Prisoners Society reported that Maher Younis, a 64–year–old from Ara town in northern Palestine, has been released and is en route to his home.
Younis was arrested on January 18th, 1983, and was given a lifetime sentence, which was subsequently shortened to 40 years.
Younis was accused of affiliation to Fatah, which was outlawed at the time, as well as “possessing weapons” and committing the “murder of an Israeli soldier.”
Karim Younis, his cousin, was freed on January 5th after a similar 40–year sentence.
