Days of Palestine – Ramallah
The Israeli Knesset approves a bill that prohibits raising the Palestinian flag in institutions funded by the occupation.
The Israeli occupation’s media announced Wednesday that the new law banning the raising of Palestinian flags in universities has passed the preliminary reading in the Israeli Knesset.
The occupation Ministerial Committee on Legislation chose to grant coalition members freedom to vote as they decide when the bill comes up for a reading in the Knesset on Wednesday.
According to the Israeli i24news website, 63 deputies supported it and 16 members opposed it.
The website pointed out that it is remarkable that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett supported the proposal presented by the opposition, as did other members of the government coalition.
According to the Israeli Ynet website, representatives of the Yesh Atid party headed by Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, with the exception of Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy, were absent from the vote.
Ynet stated, that among other things, the draft law came against the backdrop of the Nakba Day demonstrations at “Ben-Gurion” and “Tel Aviv” universities, which resulted in an escalation after the flag was raised there extensively.
He added that the draft law prohibits the raising of the flags of “hostile countries”, or the flags of the Palestinian Authority, “which is not defined as a state,” in institutions that are funded by the occupation.
️ Hamas voiced its opinion about the prohibition of the Palestinian flag in a press release today Thursday.
Jihad Taha Spokesman for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) stated saying, “The so-called Zionist Knesset’s approval in the first reading on prohibiting the raising of the Palestinian flag in institutions sponsored by the occupation government does nothing but confirms the level of failure that this entity has suffered, especially in its vain attempt to divide the Palestinian people and sow difference and disparity among its children,”
He followed by saying, “It has actively attempted to do so by virtue of the forced geographical distribution in which most of the Palestinian people live. That law refers to the level of hysteria and terror that afflicted the leaders and government of the occupation led by extremist racist Naftali Bennett.”
“This has been manifested once and once again: in the attack on the funeral of journalist Sherine Abu Akleh, the Palestinians in Jerusalem, and on university students to prevent them from raising the Palestinian flag,” he added
He summarized by saying, “the Palestinian flag stands as a symbol of national unity in the face of the brutal occupation. It will remain the banner of our return to Palestine and to every inch of our land, in which the occupying Zionists have no place or sovereignty.
