DaysofPal- Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has reportedly told political leaders that Hamas cannot be defeated militarily or politically, even if Israeli forces succeed in occupying Gaza City, according to Israeli Channel 12.
Zamir cautioned that the upcoming ground offensive in Gaza City “will not bring a decisive victory,” stressing the need to align government expectations with the army’s assessment.
He also described Gaza’s aid distribution system as a “failure” and warned that the military plan for the city poses significant risks to both soldiers and hostages.
In remarks to the Knesset, cited by Yedioth Ahronoth, Zamir admitted to uncertainty over the next stages of the war and the “day after” scenario in Gaza.
He added that Netanyahu has not shared clear plans with the military about post-war governance, including whether the Israeli occupation intends to impose direct military rule.
The comments come amid growing frustration within the military leadership. Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Zamir has expressed deep concern that the campaign will fail to meet its objectives, with any battlefield “gains” likely to erode over time unless a clear political strategy is established.
Despite these warnings, Netanyahu has pressed the army to proceed with the offensive under the agreed timeline.
Critics have raised alarms that a ground invasion could endanger Israeli captives held by Hamas.
In early September, the Israeli occupation forces have launched “Gideon’s Chariots 2,” a campaign aimed at the full reoccupation of Gaza City, part of a broader plan approved by the government on August 8 to gradually retake control of the entire Gaza Strip.
The Israeli escalation has sparked protests inside the Israeli community, with families of prisoners expressing fears for their loved ones.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s U.S.-backed military campaign in Gaza has killed 64,871 Palestinians and injured more than 164,610, according to Gaza health authorities. The majority of victims are women and children.
The war has also displaced hundreds of thousands and triggered famine, which has so far claimed 422 lives, including 145 children.
