DaysofPal- The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) carried out a targeted assassination of Gaza Strip’s police chief, Major General Mahmoud Salah, and his assistant, Major General Husam Shahwan, in a predawn airstrike on Thursday.
The attack occurred in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, as the two officials were performing their national and humanitarian duties.
The Ministry of Interior and National Security in Gaza condemned the attack, stating that it resulted in the deaths of several civilians in addition to the two high-ranking police officials. The ministry accused the Israeli forces of deliberately targeting senior Gaza officials to exacerbate chaos and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.
Major General Salah had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, serving the Gaza police force for 30 years. He was appointed as the police chief six years ago, demonstrating his commitment and expertise in maintaining security within the Strip. His deputy, Major General Shahwan, was also recognized for his years of loyal service to the police force.
The attack on al-Mawasi, a designated “safe zone” in southern Gaza, killed at least 12 Palestinians, including three children and two women, and injured 15 others. This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence that has seen repeated bombardments of areas previously declared as humanitarian safe zones by Israeli forces.
Despite the loss of its leadership, the Gaza Ministry of Interior vowed to continue serving the Palestinian people, regardless of the sacrifices and challenges they face. The ministry stated that the Israeli occupation would not succeed in “destroying the steadfastness of our people.”
This assassination comes amidst ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis. The conflict has displaced nearly 1.9 million Palestinians and led to the destruction of significant civilian infrastructure.
