Ireland, Spain to Form Alliance to Recognize State of Palestine

Ireland and Spain have reiterated their plan to forge an alliance of countries that will recognize Palestine as a nation state, vowing to muster international support for two-state solution as a way out of Gaza crisis.

Recognition of Palestinian statehood “is coming much closer”, Harris said in a joint press conference. Ireland would move with Spain and other countries “when the time is right”, he said, without giving a timeline or naming the other countries.

A bilateral meeting between Simon Harris, the Irish taoiseach, and Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, took place in Dublin on Friday to inject momentum into a diplomatic offensive in and outside the EU.

Dublin and Madrid will move in a coordinated way and raise Palestinian statehood at the European council next week, they said. Earlier, Sánchez met Norway’s prime minister and reiterated Madrid’s intention to recognize the Palestinian state by July.

Likewise, Norway welcomed the Spanish premier’s efforts to consult and coordinate with like-minded countries, saying “We will intensify that coordination in the weeks to come.”

Spain and Ireland have emerged as the most outspoken critics in the EU of Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the Israeli occupation has killed more than 33,000 Palestinian and injured other hundreds of thousands during 191 day.
