DaysOfPal– ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan defended his decision to seek arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials, stressing the urgency of addressing war crimes in Gaza.
In an interview with Der Spiegel, Karim Khan rejected accusations of acting too hastily in seeking arrest warrants for Israeli politicians and three Hamas leaders, asking, “Should I wait until everyone is dead?”
He added, “If your father, mother, or grandfather was a hostage, would you want me to wait? If it were your child or sister blown to pieces, would you want me to wait?” emphasizing the need for swift legal action in ongoing conflicts.
Karim Khan stressed that suffering should not be dealt with later but addressed immediately, comparing it to a firefighter who doesn’t wait until a house is completely burned before taking action. He highlighted the need for prompt legal intervention. The ICC, established in 2002, is responsible for investigating and prosecuting individuals for international crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
In May, Khan issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after a months-long investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza conflict.
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 43,391 Palestinians and injured 102,347 since October 7, 2023.
