DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement said that the recent statement by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) documenting abuses against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons reinforces claims of systematic violations inside Israeli detention facilities.
Hamas said the UN findings detailing patterns of alleged torture, coercion, blackmail, and mistreatment demonstrate the ongoing inhumane practices affecting thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli custody.
The group urged the international community, UN bodies, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to act on the findings by initiating an independent international investigation into the alleged abuses.
Hamas also called for Israeli officials found responsible to be referred to international justice mechanisms, for sanctions to be imposed, and for the immediate release of Palestinian detainees.
The recent UN statement referenced testimonies from formerly detained Palestinians who reported serious violations inside Israeli prisons that could amount to war crimes and grave breaches of international humanitarian law.
According to the testimonies, some former detainees described detention conditions as a living hell, citing degrading interrogations and repeated physical violence.
Others said they were subjected to strip searches while blindfolded and handcuffed, practices that human rights groups have characterized as violations of human dignity.
Palestinian prisoner advocacy organizations estimate that as of January 2026, approximately 9,350 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities under the harsh conditions.
Roughly half are reportedly detained without formal charges or designated by Israeli occupation as unlawful combatants.
Rights groups and testimonies from released prisoners have documented allegations of beatings, torture, sexual violence, starvation, and denial of adequate medical care, particularly for ill detainees.
According to Palestinian sources, at least 100 detainees from Gaza have died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023, allegedly due to torture, medical neglect, and severe detention conditions.
Advocacy groups also report that hundreds of others remain missing under circumstances they describe as enforced disappearance.
