DaysofPal- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Israel is violating international law and stressed the need to hold those responsible for these violations accountable.
Responding to a journalist’s question about reports suggesting that Israeli soldiers have received orders to kill Palestinian civilians—and whether it is time for UN member states to impose sanctions on Israel—Guterres stated:
“There is no need for reports to see the massive violations of international law (committed by Israel). When a violation occurs, those responsible must be held accountable.”
Addressing accusations from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an organization supported by Israel and the United States, which accused the UN of spreading false information about civilians being killed at aid distribution centers, Guterres replied:
“We did not fabricate the images everyone saw.”
Regarding news of new proposals for a ceasefire in Gaza, the UN chief expressed support for any peace initiative coming from the Palestinian government.
Since May 27, and without the supervision of the United Nations or other international organizations, Tel Aviv and Washington have implemented a plan to distribute limited aid. During these operations, the Israeli occupation forces have been firing on Palestinians lined up to receive food, forcing them to choose between starvation or being shot.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation has kept Gaza’s border crossings tightly sealed since March 2, blocking humanitarian aid and allowing in only a few dozen trucks, even though Gaza needs at least 500 trucks per day to meet basic needs.
Since October 7, 2023, the ongoing genocide has resulted in approximately 189,000 Palestinians killed or injured—the majority of whom are women and children—with over 11,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced, and a famine that has already claimed the lives of many, including children.
