DayofPal– The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip has issued a stark warning about the worsening economic and humanitarian conditions in the enclave, as Israel’s blockade enters its second month.
In a statement marking Labour Day, the office highlighted the devastating toll the ongoing genocide has taken on Palestinian workers. According to the statement, Gaza’s unemployment rate has surged past 50 percent, placing it among the highest in the world.
The situation has been exacerbated by the widespread destruction of industrial facilities, factories, and public service infrastructure during Israeli military operations.
“Palestinian workers in Gaza are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis,” the office said. “With the destruction of workplaces and the absence of a functioning economy, they are unable to secure a steady source of income.”
Since the onset of the latest Israeli offensive, workers have borne the brunt of the assault. The statement noted that hundreds of factories and vital service facilities have been directly targeted, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs.
Damage to critical infrastructure, including electricity networks and healthcare services, has further compromised the ability of workers to operate in safe or sustainable conditions.
The media office also condemned what it described as Israel’s “continued targeting of civilians,” particularly laborers. It reported that dozens of workers have been killed in airstrikes, with many more suffering life-altering injuries that have rendered them unable to return to work.
On Labour Day, traditionally a time to honor the contributions of workers, the office called on the international community to take urgent action to address the dire conditions in Gaza and to hold Israel accountable for its ongoing violations of international humanitarian law.
