Gaza Plunged into Darkness Amid Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis

DaysofPal- The Gaza Strip is grappling with a catastrophic humanitarian crisis as it remains submerged in darkness following Israeli systematic destruction of its power infrastructure.

The prolonged power outage, which has persisted for months, has left over two million residents struggling to survive without access to necessities such as electricity, clean water, and adequate healthcare.

Power Outage Paralyzes Daily Life

Since the Israeli military launched its offensive on October 7, 2023, targeting critical infrastructure across the coastal enclave, Gaza’s electricity networks have been decimated.

This deliberate attack has rendered daily life nearly impossible for the densely populated region, where families are forced to rely on insufficient alternative energy sources like generators and candles.

Mohammed Maqdad, a resident of Gaza City, lamented the dire situation, telling Palestine newspaper , “We cannot live like this. For many, nights are spent in complete darkness, exacerbating psychological distress, particularly among children who fear the shadows cast by the absence of light.”

Education System Under Siege

The educational landscape in Gaza has suffered immensely from the power outage. With numerous schools destroyed or repurposed as shelters for displaced families, tens of thousands of children have lost access to formal education. In response, the Ministry of Education introduced an online learning program to prevent students from missing an entire academic year.

However, the lack of reliable electricity has severely hindered progress.
Reem Fathi, a mother residing in northwest Gaza City, described the challenges faced by her children: “The power outage has had devastating effects on all aspects of life. I couldn’t enroll my children in virtual schools or help them keep up with their lessons.”

She added, “We rely on the dim light of candles for a few hours, then we spend the night in complete darkness.”

Psychological trauma runs deep among Gazan children, who cry endlessly during nights shrouded in darkness. Their anxiety and fear continue to grow, leaving parents desperate for relief.

Healthcare Services on the Brink

Hospitals in Gaza face an equally grim reality as they struggle to maintain operations amid fuel shortages.

Emergency generators, essential for powering life-saving equipment, may soon fail if supplies do not arrive promptly. Israeli restrictions on border crossings have further compounded the issue, preventing medical supplies and fuel from reaching the beleaguered health sector.

As a result, critically ill patients and wounded individuals have succumbed to their conditions, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention. The collapse of desalination plants due to the power outage has also exacerbated water scarcity, forcing families to purchase drinking water at exorbitant prices. This financial burden adds to their already precarious economic state.

Imad Abdullah, another Gaza City resident, expressed frustration over the rising cost of water: “It is impossible to afford drinking water at the moment due to its soaring price,” he said, noting that a single cup now costs 150 shekels.

A Longstanding Crisis Worsens

This latest chapter in Gaza’s electricity crisis builds upon decades of hardship. Since June 2006, when Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza’s sole power plant in the Nuseirat refugee camp, residents have endured chronic energy shortages.

The recent war of extermination, lasting 471 days until a ceasefire was declared on January 19, 2025, has only deepened the suffering.

Residents are calling on the international community to intervene decisively, demanding permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Yousef Al-Farani emphasized, “We don’t want temporary solutions—we need a permanent restoration of electricity. The consequences of this crisis demand immediate international intervention.”

Despite these harrowing conditions, Gazans remain resolute in their determination to endure. “Despite these harsh conditions, we will hold on to hope and never abandon our land. We will remain steadfast,” Al-Farani declared, reflecting the resilience of a people determined to survive against overwhelming odds.
