DaysofPal- The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has condemned the killing of journalist Mohammed Samir Washah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, following a deliberate Israeli strike on a civilian vehicle in central Gaza City.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the syndicate said the incident constitutes a fully fledged crime that can only be described as an extrajudicial execution targeting both journalism and truth. It added that the killing represents another entry in a long record of violations by Israeli forces.
The syndicate stressed that the attack was not an isolated event but a clear indication of a continued effort to silence Palestinian voices and target those who document events on the ground. It said journalists carrying cameras or pens have increasingly become targets in an attempt to suppress the Palestinian narrative.
Systematic Targeting of Media Professionals
The Syndicate emphasized that this killing is part of a dangerous and systematic escalation. This latest death brings the total number of Palestinian journalists killed to 262, a figure the group cites as shocking evidence of the intentional targeting of Palestinian media.
The Palestinian Journalists Bloc, based in Gaza, also mourned Washah, describing him as a prominent media voice who conveyed the suffering of Gaza’s residents to the world despite the dangers surrounding journalistic work. The group stated that his killing was not an isolated case, pointing to prior incitement and pursuit targeting him before his death.
Media and human rights organizations have called for urgent international action to halt attacks on journalists and hold those responsible accountable. They emphasized that such actions violate international laws and conventions that guarantee protection for media workers.
In a separate statement, the media office of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine said Israeli forces targeted Washah while he was inside his vehicle, killing him instantly. It described the incident as further evidence of deliberate attacks on journalists and a disregard for international legal standards. The office also linked the killing to reported assaults on Lebanese journalists, suggesting a broader pattern of targeting media workers across different locations in an effort to silence coverage.
A Grave Violation of International Norms
The Palestinian Resistance Committees also condemned the killing, calling it a grave violation of international norms and laws that protect journalists during armed conflict. It said the incident reflects a continued policy targeting Palestinian journalists in particular and independent reporters more broadly.
The Palestinian Media Forum held Israel fully responsible for the killing, describing it as part of an ongoing and systematic campaign against journalists. The forum noted that at least 62 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli military campaign, calling the attacks a serious breach of international protections afforded to media workers.
The forum urged international and human rights organizations to take immediate action to stop the targeting of journalists and ensure accountability for such crimes.
This development comes at a time of growing international calls to provide protection for journalists working in conflict zones. Concerns have intensified over the consequences of continued attacks on media workers and their impact on the ability to report facts from the ground.
This crime comes at a time of rising international pressure to protect journalists in conflict zones. It also coincides with reported Israeli breaches of ceasefire agreements that have led to hundreds of additional deaths and thousands of injuries.
