DaysofPal- Palestinian concerns about possible changes on the ground in the occupied West Bank have increased as a result of increased international attention to the swift military developments in the region, especially the war with Iran. Many fear that the current climate could be used to push through new realities away from sustained media scrutiny and political oversight.
In this context, the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission warned of an expected escalation in settler attacks. The commission stated that periods of regional instability are often exploited to entrench annexation policies and forced displacement.
The head of the commission, Minister Muayad Shaaban, urged Palestinians on Saturday to exercise heightened caution in response to the “new surge in settler crimes.” He pointed to regional tensions and intense international focus on recent military developments, arguing that such circumstances have previously provided cover for aggressive policies on the ground.
Shaaban said the Israeli authorities, particularly “armed settler militias,” seek to capitalize on the political climate to carry out systematic attacks against residents in villages, towns, and Bedouin communities. Past experience, he added, shows that episodes of regional escalation have been used to advance expansionist measures away from public attention.
Shaaban notes that these measures include intensified assaults on population centers, destruction of property, and the imposition of new realities through attacks on agricultural and grazing lands. He said such actions aim to pressure residents into leaving their homes through intimidation and coercion.
The commission reported a noticeable increase in the movement of armed settler groups near several villages and Bedouin areas. Shaaban accused the Israeli army of deliberate leniency, stating that it provides protection and cover for these attacks. He described the pattern of violence as organized and designed to undermine Palestinian presence in areas classified as Area C, ultimately pushing communities toward forced displacement.
Shaaban called on Palestinians, particularly those in threatened villages and communities, to raise their level of vigilance, strengthen local coordination, and report any attacks or suspicious activity through official channels. He stressed the importance of documenting violations with photographs, dates, and testimonies to help prepare legal cases against perpetrators.
He also appealed to national institutions, popular protection committees, village councils, and civil society organizations to intensify their field presence in targeted areas and organize support campaigns for Bedouin communities facing the risk of assault or displacement.
Shaaban held the Israeli government fully responsible for any attacks against Palestinian civilians, citing its legal obligations as an occupying power to protect the population under its control. He argued that current practices reflect complicity with armed settler groups.
He concluded that exploiting global preoccupation with regional developments to entrench colonial realities will not alter the fact that the land remains Palestinian. The commission, he said, will continue to monitor developments on the ground and pursue legal and field measures necessary to protect residents and safeguard their rights.
