Ex-UN Rights Director Blasts Gaza Resolution: “A Day of Shame for the UN”

DaysofPal – A former senior United Nations human rights official has sharply condemned the UN Security Council’s adoption of a US-drafted resolution proposing foreign governance and an international force in Gaza, calling the move a “colonial outrage.”

Craig Mokhiber, who previously headed the New York office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said the vote marked a “day of shame” for the organization.

In a statement on X, he accused world governments of being “on their knees before the US empire and its violent Israeli client,” warning that the resolution violates fundamental principles of international law.

“This proposal has been rejected by Palestinian civil society and factions, as well as by defenders of human rights and international law everywhere,” Mokhiber wrote, adding that “the struggle for Palestinian freedom will continue undeterred.”

The resolution passed on Monday with 13 votes in favor and abstentions from Russia and China in the 15-member Council. It endorses a US plan rooted in former president Donald Trump’s 20-point framework for Gaza’s future, an outline that includes only a single line referencing a potential Palestinian state.

Central to the plan is the creation of a Trump-chaired “Board of Peace” that would function as a transitional authority overseeing Gaza’s civil affairs. The resolution also authorizes an “international stabilization force” tasked with enforcing the “demilitarization” of the territory.

Critics argue that the proposal attempts to leverage UN legitimacy to entrench Israel’s ongoing assault and impose a foreign regime on Palestinians. They say the project bypasses recognized international legal frameworks and instead establishes an externally controlled security system that sidelines Palestinian sovereignty.

A coalition of Palestinian organizations reiterated their opposition on Sunday, warning that any externally imposed administrative structure in Gaza represents “a new colonialism.”

In a joint statement, the National Commission for Palestinian Popular Action (NCPPA) said that attempts to install a governing body “outside the will of the Palestinian people” constitute a direct violation of their right to self-determination. Such efforts, the group added, merely rebrand past systems of domination “under updated labels.”

The NCPPA is a broad global alliance that includes the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, the Palestinian National Conference, the Popular Palestinian Conference, the Palestinian Federation in Latin America, and a number of independent Palestinian figures.
