DaysofPal- The Prisoners’ Media Office has sharply criticized Israel’s decision to extend the state of emergency in its prison system, saying the measure institutionalizes ongoing abuses against Palestinian detainees and constitutes a form of “slow, intentional killing.”
In a statement released Wednesday, the office said the extension grants official authorization for continued violations inside prisons, effectively transforming detention centers into spaces where torture, starvation, medical neglect, and deprivation are systematically practiced.
The office warned that the renewed emergency status entrenches a deliberate policy of gradual death, pointing to intensified repression within prison sections, extreme overcrowding in cells, and the spread of illnesses, particularly scabies, as a result of the medical negligence.
Although the state of emergency is legally limited in duration, the office said Israeli occupation has made it a permanent reality through repeated extensions without real justification.
This practice, it added, is intended to prevent issues from being challenged in court and to strip detainees of their right to legal action and appeals.
The statement said the Israeli Prison Service and the so-called Ministry of Internal Security use the emergency framework to impose punitive measures beyond legal or judicial oversight, fostering an atmosphere of impunity and effectively legitimizing daily abuses against Palestinian prisoners.
The Prisoners’ Media Office urged the international community to meet its legal obligations by taking immediate, concrete steps to end violations in Israeli prisons, protect detainees, and activate international accountability mechanisms to hold the Israeli occupation responsible for its continued abuses.
