Talks to secure a ceasefire in Gaza are set to resume in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, today after two days of negotiations between an Israeli delegation and mediators in the Qatari capital, Doha, earlier this week.
Hamas was not directly involved in the talks, which ran from Thursday to Friday, but was kept briefed.
Hamas has accused Israel of stalling and setting roadblocks in the deal by presenting new conditions, including resumption of war.
Hamas said it wanted to see the implementation of the Biden-proposed UN Security Council-backed document that it has already agreed to last May.
The US, Egypt and Qatar, at the talks in Doha, presented a proposal to the warring parties that it said bridged the remaining gaps between Hamas and Israel.
Following the meeting, Biden told reporters on Friday that he was “optimistic” about an agreement while Netanyahu’s office said on Saturday that negotiators expressed “cautious optimism” regarding the “possibility of advancing towards a deal based on the latest American proposal”.
Hamas, however, undercut that optimism with spokesman Osama Hamdan telling Al Jazeera on Saturday that Israel was continuing to insist on its new conditions, including the right to resume its war on Gaza – something he said was unacceptable for the Palestinians.
