DaysofPal – Amnesty International has condemned the treatment of activists detained by Israeli forces during the Global Sumud Flotilla mission, describing the abuses as part of a broader pattern of violations committed against Palestinians. The organization called for justice and accountability over serious human rights violations.
In a statement, Amnesty International said that eleven Australians were among approximately 430 peaceful activists who were subjected to torture and cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment while in Israeli detention. The organization stressed that the detention of the activists was unlawful, according to documentation gathered by Amnesty and lawyers representing the detainees.
The organization stated that lawyers and participants involved in the Freedom Flotilla mission documented dozens of cases in which activists were believed to have suffered broken ribs, leaving many with breathing difficulties. Amnesty also cited testimonies and reports saying that detainees were subjected to severe humiliation, sexual harassment, and degrading treatment.
Amnesty International said the physical and sexual abuse raised serious concern and required independent and transparent investigations, as well as accountability for all those responsible under international law.
The organization further called for the use of international accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, to prosecute those responsible for the alleged violations. Amnesty emphasized that governments, including Australia, must work to ensure these mechanisms are effectively activated and that accountability efforts are pursued through to completion.
Mohamed Douar, Amnesty International Australia’s spokesperson on the occupied Palestinian territories, said the civilian activists participating in the mission, including eleven Australian citizens, were part of a peaceful solidarity initiative aimed at challenging the Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza for the past nineteen years and delivering humanitarian, medical, and essential aid supplies to Palestinians in the enclave.
Douar explained that the participants sought to support nearly two million Palestinians facing catastrophic humanitarian conditions, adding that reports describing the activists’ mistreatment reflected the daily reality endured by Palestinians.
“The serious abuses suffered by peaceful activists cannot be separated from the broader context of Israel’s military occupation and the system of apartheid imposed on Palestinians,” Douar said, adding that the practices documented in recent reports mirrored longstanding violations experienced by Palestinians for decades.
He noted that more than one million Palestinians had been detained since the beginning of the occupation, while nearly ten thousand Palestinians remain imprisoned today, including administrative detainees held without trial or formal charges.
Douar also referred to video footage showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir mocking detained solidarity activists, describing the scenes as a reminder of decades of torture and mistreatment endured by Palestinians.
Amnesty International stressed that all those responsible for the violations must be held accountable, warning that governments and authorities must not allow impunity to continue or provide protection for violators of international law.
The organization concluded that the continued absence of accountability encourages the repetition of abuses and undermines the principles of international justice, urging the international community to take concrete measures to ensure those involved are brought to justice and to prevent future violations.
