DaysofPal- In a chilling echo of nearly a century of failed attempts to displace Palestinians, former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled yet another plan aimed at relocating the residents of the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan, under the guise of “temporary reconstruction.”
This latest initiative comes amidst a long history of British, American, and Israeli schemes designed to liquidate the Palestinian cause and undermine the rights of its indigenous population.
A Legacy of Displacement Attempts
The roots of these displacement plans trace back to the early 20th century. In 1937, the British Peel Commission proposed dividing Palestine and forcibly removing Palestinians from areas with growing Jewish settlements, sparking widespread resistance during the Arab Revolt of 1936-1939. Following the Nakba of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes, the “Sinai Plan” of 1953 sought to relocate Gazans to Egypt but was thwarted by steadfast Palestinian opposition.
Subsequent decades saw numerous proposals, including Ariel Sharon’s plan in 1970 to empty Gaza and resettle its inhabitants in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, the Allon Plan in 1967 which envisioned annexing Gaza while displacing its residents to neighboring Arab lands, then the secret “Abu Mazen-Beilin” document in 1995, which conditioned Palestinian recognition of Israel on abandoning the right of return enshrined in UN Resolution 194.
Despite varying names and details, each plan shared a common goal: to push Palestinians out of their homeland. However, every attempt met failure due to unwavering Palestinian resilience and international condemnation.
Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’ and Beyond
In 2018, Donald Trump introduced his so-called “Deal of the Century,” which sought to extinguish Palestinian aspirations for statehood and normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. While it garnered some regional support, it faced global backlash, particularly over its call to displace Palestinians and confiscate their rights.
Fast forward to October 2023, when Israel launched a devastating war against Gaza, accompanied by renewed calls for mass displacement. A leaked Israeli intelligence document revealed a three-phase strategy to transfer Gazans to Sinai, involving tent cities, humanitarian corridors, and permanent resettlement. Despite these efforts, the Palestinian resistance dealt crippling blows to Israeli forces, leading to the abandonment of the “Generals’ Plan” to annex northern Gaza.
The Latest Attempt: Trump’s Return
Now, in February 2025, Trump has resurrected the idea of displacing Gazans, proposing relocation to Egypt, Jordan, and other countries under the pretext of reconstruction. His administration has refused to fund Gaza’s rebuilding unless Arab states comply with this scheme.
Reacting to the announcement, Palestinian writer D. Abdul Bari Atwan criticized Trump’s disregard for Arab leaders, accusing them of leaving Gaza isolated in the face of Israeli aggression. He emphasized that the true solution lies in allowing Palestinians to return to their ancestral lands, not forcing them into exile.
Global Reactions
Trump’s proposal has sparked outrage across the Arab, Islamic, European, and international communities. Critics argue that such plans perpetuate cycles of violence and injustice, undermining prospects for lasting peace in the region.
As history attests, all attempts to uproot Palestinians have ultimately failed. Their determination to remain rooted in their homeland, bolstered by global solidarity, continues to frustrate successive Israeli and American strategies.
In conclusion, the enduring struggle of the Palestinian people serves as a testament to their unyielding spirit. As Atwan aptly stated, “The most beautiful life for this people is to return to their land, their towns and villages, not to be deported to a third country.”
