DaysofPal – Israeli occupation authorities continue to hold 43 Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip whose prison terms have either expired or are due to expire by the end of December 2026, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Information Office.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the office said several of the prisoners completed their sentences months ago but remain in Israeli custody without any legal basis or judicial order authorizing their continued detention. It added that the remaining prisoners are expected to complete their sentences progressively through the end of 2026.
“The Israeli occupation authorities continue to commit a legal and humanitarian crime by holding 43 prisoners from the Gaza Strip, some of whom have already completed their sentences, while others will complete theirs by the end of December 2026,” the statement said.
The office accused the Israeli occupation authorities of continuing to detain prisoners after the completion of their sentences, or of being expected to withhold their release once their prison terms expire, describing the practice as “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.”
It stressed that “the continued detention of any prisoner after the end of their sentence constitutes arbitrary and unlawful detention and represents a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.”
The statement did not identify the prisoners or provide details on the reasons for their continued detention. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli occupation authorities.
