Italy Suspends Defense Agreement with Israel Amid ME War

DayofPal—Italy has announced the suspension of a long-standing defense cooperation agreement with Israel, marking a significant shift in relations between the two sides.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the government decided to halt the automatic renewal of the agreement due to the current regional situation.

The pact, originally approved in 2006 and renewed every five years, facilitated cooperation in military technology, research, training, and defense industries.

The move comes as criticism within Italy has intensified over Israel’s genocide in Gaza and Lebanon.

Opposition figures have welcomed the decision, describing it as a response to sustained public pressure and widespread protests across the country.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar downplayed the importance of the agreement, suggesting its suspension would have limited practical impact.

Relations between the two sides have deteriorated in recent weeks. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recently expressed solidarity with Lebanon and condemned attacks on civilians, prompting diplomatic tensions.

In response, Israel summoned Italy’s ambassador, while Rome also lodged protests over attacks involving Israeli forces.

The diplomatic strain extends beyond bilateral ties. Donald Trump criticized Meloni’s stance, particularly her decision not to support U.S. military actions against Iran, highlighting growing divisions among Western allies.

Despite previously strong ties, especially during earlier engagements with Israeli war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, Italy’s current position signals a recalibration of its foreign policy in response to regional developments and domestic political pressure.

The suspension underscores a broader shift in European responses to the ongoing wars, as public opinion and political dynamics continue to evolve.
