DaysofPal- The Palestine Red Crescent Society took part on Sunday morning in a medical evacuation operation through the Rafah land crossing, following the resumption of activity at the border point after a pause during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
In a press statement, the organization said its teams transported 20 individuals, including patients and their companions, from its rehabilitation hospital in Khan Younis to the crossing in preparation for their travel abroad to receive treatment.
The evacuation was carried out in coordination with the World Health Organization and relevant authorities as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to secure care for cases that cannot be treated inside the Gaza Strip.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its role in these evacuations is part of its humanitarian mission to support the sick and wounded and facilitate access to treatment. The move comes in response to mounting pressure on Gaza’s healthcare system and the growing need to transfer patients to hospitals outside the territory.
The resumption of medical evacuations through the Rafah crossing follows a temporary suspension during the holiday period. Medical teams have continued their work to ensure the safe transfer of patients and provide necessary support until their departure.
The closure of the Rafah crossing and other border points had halted the entry of humanitarian and medical aid into Gaza. This has contributed to worsening living conditions, severe shortages of essential supplies, and restrictions on the movement of people, including patients and the wounded awaiting evacuation.
Israeli authorities partially reopened the Rafah crossing in early February 2026, allowing the departure of patients and injured individuals and the return of others under specific conditions. This step is part of the second phase of a ceasefire agreement that came into effect in October 2025.
The Rafah crossing remains the only land route connecting Gaza to the outside world without passing through Israel. It is located in an area that has been under Israeli control since May 2024, following limited reopenings during 2025.
