Struggle against Famine in Gaza Hindered by Israeli Siege

WFP: Gaza food deliveries insufficient for one day’s needs

DaysofPal- Civil society expert Mohsen Abu Ramadan has stated that the struggle against famine in the Gaza Strip is hindered by the Israeli suffocating siege on Gaza.

Ramadan stressed that the success of any ceasefire in the Gaza Strip depends on Israeli commitment to the agreed humanitarian protocol and urgent measures to prevent worsening famine conditions.

In a statement on Wednesday, Abu Ramadan said that Palestinian factions’ position regarding the Mladenov plan is based on the necessity of Israeli occupation adhering to the humanitarian protocol outlined in the agreement.

He explained that Israeli occupation has not yet allowed sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza, noting that the protocol stipulates the entry of around 600 aid trucks per day, while in reality, fewer than 200 trucks have been permitted.

He added that a significant portion of these trucks carry commercial goods rather than urgently needed food and humanitarian supplies.

“Continuing this situation places Gaza on the brink of famine, with increasing cases of malnutrition and the spread of disease,” Abu Ramadan said, calling for genuine pressure from mediators and the international community to ensure Israeli occupation fulfills its humanitarian commitments.

He emphasized that progress in subsequent phases of any agreement requires adherence to the principles of reciprocity and synchronization in implementing obligations, ensuring that no party violates agreed terms.

Abu Ramadan also stressed the importance of ensuring fair and transparent distribution of aid through competent international, United Nations, and local institutions.

He called for effective measures to combat the hoarding of goods by some traders who exploit shortages to raise prices and profit at the expense of vulnerable civilians.

According to Abu Ramadan, addressing Gaza’s humanitarian crisis requires full compliance with the humanitarian protocol, alongside strengthened oversight of aid distribution to guarantee it reaches those in need fairly and efficiently.

The humanitarian protocol is a key annex to ceasefire agreements, aimed at facilitating the entry of emergency aid, supporting relief operations, and enabling reconstruction efforts.

Palestinian factions and human rights organizations accuse Israel of obstructing the implementation of the protocol by preventing the entry of essential materials such as heavy equipment, fuel, and shelter supplies.

The protocol includes provisions for the daily entry of approximately 600 aid trucks, including around 50 fuel trucks, as well as large quantities of supplies such as 200,000 tents and 60,000 mobile housing units to shelter displaced people, in addition to medical equipment and urgent relief materials.

Famine conditions are once again looming over Gaza amid tightened restrictions on border crossings and continued limitations on humanitarian aid, with reports also pointing to the looting of aid by armed groups.

Since early 2026, Gaza has been experiencing a severe and ongoing hunger crisis described as a “silent famine,” with humanitarian aid levels falling dangerously short of meeting the population’s needs.

Most residents now rely on barely one meal per day, while many survive on less than that, sometimes eating only once every 48 hours.

This has led to widespread acute malnutrition and hundreds of deaths linked to food shortages.

Food security conditions in Gaza are described as catastrophic, largely driven by the blockade and systematic obstruction of food entry, leaving hundreds of aid trucks stranded just short of reaching those in need.

At the end of May, the Palestinian Cabinet warned of alarming UN reports indicating that approximately 1.6 million people in Gaza, around 77 percent of the population, are at immediate risk of famine due to declining humanitarian funding and reduced aid flows.
