Israel’s Siege Is Engineering a Health Crisis for Gaza’s Newborns

Israeli Genocide Aggravates Dilemma of Palestinian Mothers

DaysofPal – A risky Israeli policy that targets the health, development, and very future of a whole generation of Palestinian children is gradually taking shape amid the ongoing conflict and the tightening blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Every day, fresh data demonstrates that Gaza’s newborns are in an unprecedented state of health collapse due to the intentional denial of basic nutrition and necessary medications. Doctors describe the situation as a systematic assault on children before they are even born.

A System Built to Produce Malnutrition and Birth Defects

The denial of fundamental medicines such as folic acid and prenatal supplements, critical for fetal development, has coincided with the blocking of essential foods, including proteins, meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products. Medical experts warn that this combination forms a deliberate architecture of starvation, engineering a generation destined for long-term health disorders and congenital deformities.

Munir al-Bursh, Director General of Hospitals in Gaza, says the health condition of newborns has reached a point of “structural collapse.” Speaking to the Palestinian Information Center, he stressed that the near-total absence of essential prenatal medication is not a temporary disruption but the result of a planned, precise, and systematic blockade.

According to al-Bursh, 82 percent of children under one year old now suffer from varying degrees of anemia, a direct consequence of severe shortages in iron, protein, and vitamins that should be supplied through maternal nutrition and early infant feeding.

A Surge in Birth Defects

Health Ministry data reveals an alarming spike in congenital deformities. Between 1,200 and 1,500 newborns were born with serious anomalies in the past year, the highest rate in decades. These defects include malformations of the nervous system, spine, urinary tract, and heart.

Al-Bursh explained that these abnormalities are linked directly to the deprivation of folic acid during the early weeks of pregnancy, the critical period in which the neural tube forms. For months, these medications remained on Israel’s “blacklist,” barred from entering the besieged enclave.

The blockade is not limited to medicines; Israel also restricts essential foods needed by pregnant women. Without milk, meat, and eggs, fetal growth becomes compromised, increasing rates of premature birth and severely underweight newborns. Delivery rooms across Gaza now report a dramatic rise in infants weighing less than two kilograms, placing them at high risk of illness and early mortality.

“These deformities are no longer isolated incidents,” al-Bursh said. “They have become a terrifying societal phenomenon. This is a deliberate, systematic attack on the health of mothers at its roots.”

He added that congenital abnormalities today occur at more than six times the pre-war rate, describing the situation as a form of biological warfare:
“We are witnessing the manufacture of a weakened generation. This is not a byproduct of war; it is a crime against the health and genetic future of Palestinian society.”

Engineered Hunger: A Strategy of Control

Dr. Ahmad al-Farra, head of Pediatrics at Nasser Medical Complex, echoes these warnings. He says Israel is enforcing a “deliberate nutritional engineering strategy” that undermines children’s growth and development.

“What is happening to Gaza’s children is not simple hunger,” al-Farra explained. “It is a carefully designed famine. Israel selectively allows secondary goods while blocking the essential nutrients required for healthy child development.”

The blockade, he noted, is engineered with precision: Israel permits items of low nutritional value but prevents the entry of animal proteins and dairy products, the core building blocks of neurological and muscular development.

The result is widespread, compounded malnutrition. The ban on infant formula and essential vitamins threatens the lives of newborns and accelerates developmental failure. Pediatric departments in southern Gaza now admit growing numbers of children suffering from severe wasting, stunted growth, rickets, and cognitive delays.

“Israel knows exactly what it is doing,” al-Farra stated. “It is not random. It is a targeted assault on the developmental systems of the child’s body.”

He added that medical teams are witnessing alarming increases in delays in both motor and language development among infants and young children, direct consequences of the blockade on protein and fat necessary for brain growth.

“We are watching a generation undergo systematic health depletion,” he warned. “A child deprived today will never regain what was lost tomorrow. This is the most dangerous stage of the war, when it shifts from destroying homes to destroying bodies, blood, and the brains of children.”

The surge in congenital deformities is not a passing medical statistic; it is an urgent alarm bell signaling the long-term consequences of a prolonged war that has targeted human life itself, long before infrastructure.

With the ongoing siege, the scarcity of medicines, the collapse of diagnostic capacity, and the near-total absence of basic healthcare, the future of thousands of pregnant women and newborns remains suspended in uncertainty.

The central question persists: How long will Gaza’s children be left to face a fate they did not choose, paying the price for Israel’s war of annihilation that does not spare even the unborn?
