Spanish Premier Slams EU Response to Gaza Genocide as Failure

DaysofPal- In a striking critique of the European Union’s stance on the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has labeled Europe’s response as a “failure” that undermines its global credibility.

Sanchez, who has been outspoken about the humanitarian crisis in the region, argues that internal divisions within the EU have led to inaction and double standards, particularly when contrasted with the unified approach to the Ukraine crisis.

Sanchez is the first senior European leader to publicly accuse the Israeli occupation of genocide in Gaza, referencing recent EU human rights reports that suggest violations of international obligations.

He emphasized the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, highlighting over 56,000 civilian deaths and severe food shortages leading to “famine-like conditions.”

The Spanish Prime Minister has urged the EU to suspend its association agreement with the Israeli occupation, pointing out the inconsistency of imposing multiple sanctions on Russia while not taking similar measures against the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

“It is a failure,” Sanchez stated. “Absolutely. We must address this to maintain our credibility in managing international crises.” He added.

Sanchez advocates for immediate concrete actions, including a ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and a renewed push for a two-state solution.

Spain, alongside Slovenia and other European nations, has issued joint declarations calling for the lifting of the Gaza blockade and proposing new sanctions on violent settlers, even suggesting an arms embargo on the Israeli occupation.

Despite Sanchez’s calls, achieving consensus among EU member states to suspend the cooperation agreement with the Israeli occupation remains a significant challenge due to deep-seated divisions.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly criticized what he perceives as the EU’s “double standards,” warning that failing to act on Gaza could erode the EU’s credibility on the global stage.

While Sanchez pushes for stronger measures, other EU leaders advocate for a more balanced approach, and other member states remain cautious about labeling the situation as genocide, wary of jeopardizing trade and security relations, although many international organizations have verified the Israeli crimes in Gaza as a real genocide against defenseless people.
