Red Cross: Israel’s Gaza Assault Defies All Legal and Moral Standards

DaysofPal – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has sounded the alarm over Israel’s intensified military operations in Gaza, warning that the humanitarian crisis is reaching new depths.

“What we are seeing in Gaza goes beyond any acceptable legal or moral standards,” the ICRC said in a statement on Thursday. “Whether civilians are forced to leave or remain, they must be protected from the dangers of hostilities.”

Christian Cardon, the ICRC’s chief spokesman, stressed that Israel’s push to seize Gaza City would mean “more killing, more displacement, more destruction, and more panic.”

“Gaza is a closed space, from which nobody can escape … and where access to healthcare, food, and safe water is dwindling,” Cardon said. He warned that humanitarian workers themselves are increasingly unsafe, calling the situation “intolerable.”

Cardon, who has played a key role in Red Cross humanitarian efforts and in the exchanges of captives held by Hamas since October 7, underscored that conditions in Gaza are deteriorating hour by hour as violence intensifies.

UN Special Rapporteur on Housing Balakrishnan Rajagopal echoed the Red Cross warning, stating that the humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated after two years and has now reached “catastrophic levels.”

He noted that people are dying from famine and from Israel’s ongoing prevention of relief supplies and reconstruction materials entering the Strip, despite earlier commitments under ceasefire agreements.

Rajagopal sharply criticized the global response: “The international community is failing the people of Gaza, and I wonder what can be done to avert further disaster.”

He emphasized that international law obligates states to end the illegal occupation of Palestine and to halt war crimes and genocide in Gaza under the Geneva Conventions and the Genocide Convention.
